I Get That

February 16, 2025

I get that you want to feel bubbly about talking stages, I get that,

I get that you love to feel loved, I get that,

I get that you too want to love, I get that,

I get that you want to miss someone, to spoil someone, to be spoilt,

To have late night calls and early morning hello’s, and all those seemingly nonsensical emotions that only those in love can relate to,

I actually get that, but at what cost?

Every tear, every ache, every heartbreak, every ghosted session, every sound of a text message, as you wait with bated breath that,

finally they see you, they hear you, they love you,

fingers trembling to open the text, the sound of the last piece , felt in your throat,

only to find a text from ZESCO informing you that the lack of power in your area is not a fault, but due to load management.

Your heart sinks and as you fall to the ground in tears, clutching the last piece of your heart,

you don’t know whether to keep crying or to start laughing, because the irony that even ZESCO wants that last tiny piece, is not lost on you,

I get that, but at what cost.

All these crazy thoughts swirling through my head,

Love yourself, respect yourself, learn to switch off…….

Easy to say and too complicated to try,

So, I blame myself because,

It’s not something that goes away, it lingers, just like the urge to smoke,

and so, the NHS offers you a free nicotine patch to help you curb the urge.

Elon, stop trying to go to Mars. There are no small green men,

Instead, why not invent a heartbreak patch?

Why not help me hold onto the last piece of my heart?

DMMU, do you not recognize this disaster? Do you have a survival pack for this crisis?

I Take a deep breath and reach for multiple nicotine patches,

If I must fall to the ground one more time,

Well, it will be a nicotine free, fall.

I definitely get that,

but girl, Get up!
